Gregoire Besson UK to launch the new Helidisc at Cereals 2012

Gregoire Besson UK will be unveiling the latest addition to its cultivator range at this years Cereals event. The Helidisc cultivator will be launched on stand L1312 at the show, which runs from the 13^th to 14^th June at Boothby Graffoe in Lincolnshire.

The Helidisc uses front and back discs that are hydraulically adjustable and controlled independently, providing a more level finish. This also increases the choice of tines that can be mounted as well as considerably reducing the overall length of the machine.

The new Helidisc is available in two models for differing conditions. The first model for use on light to medium land, has a front row on in-line discs, three rows of spring loaded Eurocult tines, another row of in-line discs, followed by a new double Emopak press.

The tines can work 300m below the discs and the front gangs run in opposite directions to the rear providing a better mix and precise depth control. The 242mm spacing between the tines and variety of points and wings allows all of the soil to be cultivated.

The second Helidisc model is built for work on medium to heavy land with the spring-loaded tines being replaced with either Discordon tines, which go 300mm below the discs, or with Helios (Michel) or LD straight tines, both of which go 400mm below the discs. The tines are spaced at 484mm, but the disc spacing remains the same. A choice of a double Emopak roller or a single larger roller is also available.

Get your garden gleaming with a little help from Dri-Pak

The start of the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is a sure fire sign that spring has certainly sprung. However, before you rush to create your own Gold Award garden you may want to undertake a bit of “outdoor” spring cleaning, to clear your garden of the winter blues and make sure your perennials have that perfect back drop.

Tackling the great outdoors does not have to be a chore, and by using traditional, sustainable product you can do it cheaply and quickly, whilst protecting your most precious possessions – your plants. Products such as Soda Crystals, White Vinegar and Bicarbonate of Soda have been used around the house for hundreds of years, but these traditional cleaning solutions can also be used in the garden.

Firstly, a good work man never blames his tools so before you start work make sure yours are in tip top condition. Use half a cup of Soda Crystals mixed with one litre of very hot water to clean caked grass, dirt and grime off spades, forks, trowels and even lawn mower blades. Rinse, dry and lightly oil the metal parts to prevent rust.*

To help you navigate more easily around your garden clear the moss and rotting leaves from pathways, patios and steps. Sprinkle Soda Crystals directly on to the affected areas, use a watering can to wet, or put them down when rain is expected, and leave for a day or two. Once the moss has turned brown, brush it off preventing any excess Soda Crystal solution going on to the grass, and rinse with plenty of clean water to reveal spotless, safer pathways.

You must also remember those hard to reach places, such as drains and gutters, need a bit of care and attention at this time of year too. They can become dirty and clogged over the winter months so the first thing to do is clear the drains and gutters of visible debris and leaves. Pour 500g of Soda Crystals directly down the drains and leave for ten minutes before rinsing with very hot water to clear them of any built up grime and grease. Gutters can also be washed with a Soda Crystal mixture to remove rotting leaves and any other blockages.

If you have any iron ornaments or iron gates that have gathered dirt and rust over winter and need a repaint, simply cover them with Bicarbonate of Soda and pour White Vinegar over the top. This will make the surface bubble. When it stops, simply scrub off with a stiff brush and you will be left with a smooth surface ready to be painted.

Now you can prepare for the stars of your garden. To give your plants the best start in life, wash out your terracotta, stone or plastic pots with a mixture of half a cup of Soda Crystals and one litre of water to help remove old compost and caked on grime. You can also make your stone ornaments or birdbaths look like new by spraying Liquid Soda Crystals directly on to the surfaces, leaving for around an hour and brushing with a stiff brush before rinsing with clean water.

After all that hard work, make sure you can sit back, relax and admire all of your hard work by cleaning any moss and algae off plastic patio furniture with a mixture of Soda Crystals and hot water. This method also works well to prepare wooden garden furniture, prior to applying a new coat of linseed oil.

And last but not least, prepare for those long, balmy summer evenings by getting your barbeque ready for action. Simply soak the grills and utensils in a solution of one cup Soda Crystals and five litres of water, before scrubbing them with a wire brush. For the barbeque itself, apply the Soda Crystal solution to the casing before washing it off with a sponge and rinsing with clean water.

*Always disconnect electric mowers from the power supply and keep water away from electrical contacts etc. Dry thoroughly before use.

Granguard your floors for a perfect game

One of the key components to any sports hall is its floor. A substandard floor can have a negative impact on the game being played on it, for example affecting the bounce of a ball or the height a player is able to jump. Health and safety are also major considerations when contemplating the refurbishment of a sports floor.

Somerset-based Courtship Limited is a specialist in sports hall maintenance and refurbishment, and has first-hand experience of how important a top quality floor is.

“In any sporting facility it is the floor that receives the most wear and tear. Deterioration of the surface can then have a detrimental effect on performance and even cause an increase in injuries through slipping and tripping,” says Marcus Ryan, Managing Director at Courtships Limited.

We were tasked with stripping the surfaces right back and applying a finishing coat to protect the newly revealed floors and increase their longevity,” continues Marcus. “As the floors were made from Granwood, we chose the new Granguard Aqua II-Pack from Granwax to finish them.”

GNB Industrial Power to unveil innovative Modular Energy Management System at All-Energy Show 2012

GNB Industrial Power will be unveiling its innovative Modular Energy Management System (MEMS), the latest addition to its renewable energy applications range, at this year’s All-Energy Show taking place in Aberdeen from the 23rd to 24^thMay 2012.

The market for the storage and integration of renewable energy is set to grow, with total worldwide revenue for energy storage expected to reach £21 billion by 2020. With this in mind, GNB has taken up the challenge of developing an innovative and cost-effective storage system based on its lead acid technology.

The Modular Energy Management System (MEMS) from GNB Industrial Power

“We began developing a scalable Battery Energy Storage System for on and off-grid applications in 2009,” explains Bruce Glaister, UK Sales Manager of GNB Industrial Power. “Since then our Systems Development team, based at the European Development Centre in Büdingen Germany, have been working hard to design and build a transportable prototype for use throughout Europe.”

This new “turn-key” battery storage system is modular in design and transportable by truck or sea. It is based on a twenty foot sea container which acts as a compact and low cost battery room (“Energy Module”), and a ten foot container for the AC/DC converter and AC-grid connection (“Power Module”). Each module serves as a building block from which solutions can be assembled to a customer’s specific requirements and installed with the minimum preparation.

“Our aim is to create a storage solution that is easy to install and even easier to manage, giving our customers complete control over their energy storage system. With this in mind we are working closely with D3I GmbH to create a system manager,” continues Bruce. “This controller will allow the system to be operated autonomously or directly commanded via a Graphic User Interface or remotely via Web interface, allowing MEMS to be safely operated by customers either on-site or remotely via the web.”

Going forward, GNB will be designing region-specific versions of the “Power Module” to ensure its compatibility with different grid voltages and frequencies in different countries. It has also begun the development of a control strategy for Photovoltaic (PV) applications which will allow a PV/MEMS combination system to have controlled electrical power output to the consumer or grid.

The MEMS can be adapted to many different applications including peak shaving for the utility and industrial industries; time shift for renewables; long term storage of renewables; and grid voltage stabilisation.

“Renewable energy is high on everyone’s agenda and finding ways of harvesting and storing this sustainable energy is an ever increasing dilemma. However, we believe our Modular Energy Management System will allow many more companies to store and use renewable energy efficiently and, more importantly, cost-effectively,” concludes Bruce.

Banish Kitchen Odours!

Cooking meals from scratch is more popular than ever thanks to cookery television shows and growing trends for healthy eating and economical living. However the excitement of trying new flavours and recipes can have its downside. Cooking foods with strong aromas like curry and fish can leave smells that linger long after the meal has been enjoyed. This can put some people off cooking different cuisines, but there is a natural and effective way to neutralise kitchen odours and get rid of that pong for good. The natural deodorising properties of White Vinegar and Bicarbonate of Soda eliminate odours safely and inexpensively.

Once the meal is over, simply place a pan of 200ml White Vinegar and 500ml water on the stove and leave to gently simmer for 15 minutes. White Vinegar is a natural deodoriser that will neutralise bad odours, making the room smell fresh and clean in no time.

If culinary masterpieces don’t go to plan and a burnt, smoky smell lingers, simply spray a 50/50 White Vinegar and water solution around the room, and on any soft furnishings that have absorbed the smell*. Adding a few drops of essential oil to the solution will also fragrance the air.

Nasty niffs can also linger around kitchen bins. To help combat the stink, regularly wash the bin and any recycling containers with a Soda Crystals solution. Once dry, add a two table spoons of Bicarbonate of Soda to the bottom of the bin to absorb bad odours naturally. Keep fridge food odours at bay by placing an open box of Bicarbonate of Soda in the fridge for up to four months.

There’s nothing like a home-cooked meal made with fresh ingredients, so don’t let strong smelling foods put you off your cooking your favourite foods!

Health and safety in the workplace is an increasingly hot topic and is particularly important when undertaking battery charging and maintenance. The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations place considerable emphasis on assessing potential risks and taking the appropriate measures to ensure personnel are working in a safe environment – especially when operating in areas with harmful substances such as acid. Mansfield Sand keeps riders riding all year round with Premier Fibre

Adverse weather conditions can seriously disrupt a rider’s training programme as well as having the potential to cause long term damage to a horse’s limbs. Hard ground caused by a prolonged period of drought or a severe frost is the worst culprit for preventing riders from exercising, even in purpose-built arenas.

Many Manéges with sand surfaces will become either frozen in the cold winter months making them unusable, or very dry in the summer which can force a horse to work “through” the sand rather than on top of it. Replacing the entire arena can be costly and may deter many riders from rectifying any problems, but this is not necessary. Incorporating another material into the existing sand surface is an alternative cost-effective way of creating an “all-weather” Manége.

Premier Fibre from Mansfield Sand, a Mansfield-based developer and supplier of specialist equestrian surfaces, is a unique multi-fibre and PVC blend which can be added to new or existing surfaces to help stabilise them. The dust-free fibre also significantly increases the resilience of the surface.

As well as creating a more consistent surface Premier Fibre aids moisture retention and so requires the minimum of maintenance in dryer periods to keep it in top condition. It also improves the freezing resistance of the sand keeping it useable throughout the winter months. Peter Roule, of Fiskerton, had Premier Fibre added to his outdoor arena and has already noticed a significant difference.

“Our original sand arena was used on a daily basis but we started to notice that it was riding very deep. At the time we were training one of our younger horses and it was not helping the development of either the horse or the rider,” explains Peter.

“We did not want to replace our entire Manége so decided to contact Mansfield Sand, who we have used previously, for advice. They suggested adding Premier Fibre to our existing sand and it has really worked. Not only has it significantly reduced the amount of maintenance we have to do but it has also created a more stable working surface that can be used all year round regardless of the weather conditions. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who wants a first class product,” adds Peter.

Louise Barrington-Earp, Equestrian Technical Specialist at Mansfield Sand, continues, “Premier Fibre is a completely new and unique product for Mansfield Sand and was developed after talking to customers such as Peter. Many equestrian centres and owner riders do not have the money to completely renovate their arenas when they have a problem. “Premier Fibre allows them to create an almost new surface helping both horse and rider to train to their full ability as well as enabling them to use the arena for a longer period of time,” concludes Louise.

Spring cleaning with the experts!

If the thought of the dreaded spring clean leaves you in a panic, you’re not alone! Many of us look around our homes and despair at the amount of junk that needs clearing and the dirt that needs shifting, and what’s worse - we know the longer we leave it, the worse it will get! But don’t fret, we’ve asked our cleaning experts to offer their professional advice to help you get motivated!

Racheal Hughes set up the award-winning green cleaning company, Green Mop, in the Brighton, Cheltenham and Worcester areas in 2007, and knows that starting such a big project is not an easy task.

“Facing the big Spring Clean can be daunting. My mantra for cleaning my own home is to do little and often, but some chores are regularly missed out in my normal routine and saved for The Big Blitz!”

Owner of professional cleaning company, Splash Clean in Winchester and Alresford, Colleen Skinner also knows that being prepared to tackle the mountain of work is very important.

“The mere thought of spring cleaning can drain every last drop of energy out of some folk! Take it easy and try to rope in a friend to help with the task. Arm yourself with boxes and black bags… and a good supply of tea!”

Where to start?

Both Colleen and Racheal agree that clearing out the clutter is a must before any major cleaning operation.

Colleen Skinner from Splash Clean

“A tidy house is much easier to clean so the first chore is to de-clutter! Sort through all the things you’ve previously piled up to sort out ‘later’… because ‘later’ is NOW!” advises Racheal.

Colleen recommends getting organised with boxes and bin bags before you start: “The most obvious thing to do is start at the top of the house and work your way down. Place all the things that need to go to other parts of the house in boxes labeled ‘bedrooms’, ‘living room’, ‘charity shop’, etc and put any recycling and rubbish into black bags.”

Looking at things with a critical eye also helps the process. “Be ruthless - if you have not used it for more than a year, re-home it via charity shop, freecycle or ebay. Try and get everything cleared out on the same day. Check the opening times of recycling centres & charity shops so you don’t end up with a daunting pile of bags & boxes at your front door!” Coleen adds.

‘The Big Blitz’

Once the clutter has been cleared away, it’s time to get down to some good old fashioned cleaning!

Racheal Hughes from Green Mop

Racheal suggests splitting the work down into tasks: “Rather than doing the work room by room, I prefer to break it down into tasks. It’s more efficient that way, and if you have help you can divide up the tasks. For example, do the dusting in every room first, then the vacuuming, followed by any wet cleaning. That way, you’re not lugging everything from room to room. You just do the one task, put that stuff away, and get what you need for the next task.”

Dusting can be a really great way of visually monitoring your progress – the dirtier your cloth gets, the cleaner your home gets!

Colleen explains “I start by using a long duster to dust from the ceiling down and then work my way around the room with a damp microfibre cloth dusting all surfaces, and sides of furniture. Then I use a clean, damp microfibre cloth to wipe down light switches, door frames, window frames, skirting boards etc.”

Cleaning methods

Both Colleen and Racheal have their favourite cleaning products, but a passion for simple and natural cleaning methods has led them to champion traditional products like Soda Crystals and White Vinegar, as well as modern cleaning products like ecloth.

“At Green Mop we use products that are simple but effective. Grabbing a bottle labelled ‘kitchen cleaner’ is all too easy, but it’s only when you look on the back that you find a long list of unpronounceable chemical names that are just not necessary to clean your home with” says Racheal.

Colleen agrees: “I have always been very aware of the many chemicals we come into contact with on a daily basis, often without even thinking about it. I don’t particularly like the idea of coating my home in products that come with warning labels! I have found that traditional Dri-Pak products like Soda Crystals work equally well, if not better, and are far more economical, especially as the products can be used across the home for a variety of tasks. It also leaves you feeling rather virtuous and domesticated!”

Tackling those forgotten about areas

Racheal and Colleen have a wealth of experience when it comes to using traditional and natural products in big cleaning projects. Here are some of their favourite methods to help you get to grips with the jobs that are often left for a big spring clean.

Windows, as well as dusty shutters and blinds are some of the main areas that often get overlooked. “They are dust collectors, but if you leave too long before cleaning, the dust ends up as stubborn grime. Condensation also collects and mildew builds up on the window frames, so it all needs a good wash down” Racheal explains.

“All you need is a damp microfibre cloth, some Liquid Soda Crystals, a bottle of White Vinegar, and a bucket of warm water for rinsing. Oh, and a step ladder! Squirt a little of the Soda Crystals onto your damp cloth and wipe across the blind - the grime lifts off the slats in one wipe. White Vinegar is great at tackling mildew and mould, simply squirt and wipe the window frames to shift it. Whilst I’m there, I’ll give the inside of the windows a clean and buff up with White Vinegar too.”

Colleen uses natural Bicarbonate of Soda throughout the house: “Freshening carpets and getting rid of odours is so simple, just sprinkle the carpet with plenty of Bicarbonate of Soda, leave for 30 minutes and then thoroughly vacuum the carpets. In bathrooms, Bicarbonate of Soda, followed by White Vinegar can be poured into plugholes, to help clear any grime buildup”

“Dri-Pak Limescale remover is also fantastic on taps and fittings, it not only leaves them shining and streak free, but also smells limey and fresh!” Colleen also recommends using an old toothbrush to clean those hard to reach places like the corners of the skirting board or window frames.

And relax…

When your spring clean is finally over take time to appreciate your hard work! Getting into a routine of cleaning little and often is the best way to keep on top of the clutter and grime. Danielle Farnsworth is flying high thanks to Mansfield Sand

Competing at the highest level in any equestrian sport takes dedication and hard work. However, using the correct equipment can be just as important as natural ability - and never more so than in the world of show jumping. Even the most talented horse and rider can fail to reach the top if they are using substandard equipment. As a professional show jumper, Nottinghamshire-based Danielle Farnsworth knows this better than anyone.

“Competing successfully in this industry does take a lot of commitment and effort. Danielle’s love of all things equestrian began very early and she started competing at the age of ten. She has since made the successful transition to the senior level, competing regularly in events around the UK and Europe on nine horses owned by a number of different owners. Most recently Danielle competed in the “Horse & Hound Foxhunter Championship” at the 2011 Horse of the Year Show, held at the NEC in Birmingham, competing against house-hold names such as John Whitaker. She also competed at London’s Olympia on one of her more experienced horses, Orlof Wisbecq, in the Under23's Team Murka Class where she finished in an excellent fourth place.

“It was my first time competing at Olympia, and it was a brilliant experience,” adds Danielle.

“In preparation for the qualifying events and the shows themselves, I was training every day to make sure both myself and my horses were on top form. As a consequence our Manége was subjected to daily wear and tear, and as one of the most vital pieces of equipment I use, it was essential it remained in good condition,” continues Danielle.

Initially, Danielle’s Manége had a silica sand surface which became deep and dusty, and rubber was added to help stabilize it.

“The rubber helped to even out the surface, but it soon became apparent that it was only a temporary measure. Mansfield Sand had been recommended to us so we decided to contact them for advice,” adds Danielle.

Owning a horse can be an extremely rewarding, if expensive, hobby! Granwax and Brightwood Flooring help bring Aspley Church back to life

Aspley Evangelical Church in Nottingham was established in 1931. It started its life as a wooden hut, but over the past 80 years it has grown to become an integral part of the Aspley community.

However, the age of the building and the ever increasing footfall began to have a negative effect on the interior of the Church, especially its floors. A lack of maintenance over the last 25 years, together with damage from a recent flood, had all taken their toll and caused the floor surfaces to look tired and worn. This was the condition of the floors when Matt Bright of Brightwood Flooring was called in to take a look.

“The Church was built in 1931 and the majority of the floors are original. Although they have been cleaned on a regular basis, the sheer number of people that have walked on them has left its mark,” explains Matt Bright, Owner of Brightwood Flooring.

The softwood flooring had become uneven, tired-looking and discoloured, and Matt was tasked with bringing it back to life. He started by stripping back the main hall floor, as well as the floors in three side rooms. He then prepared the surfaces for the sealant and finish by sanding and reseeding the wooden blocks.

Once the floors were ready, Matt applied a layer of Barrier Seal from Granwax Products Ltd. Barrier Seal is a specialist primer designed for floors previously treated with solvent based wax polishes to help prevent potential rejection to floor finishes. It also helps to enhance the original colour of the floor.

As soon as the seal had dried Matt applied his chosen finish, Master Finish - Matt Finish from Granwax Products Ltd. The fast curing, two component water-based polyurethane finish has been specifically created for wooden floors that are subjected to heavy wear, so was the perfect choice for Aspley Evangelical Church.

“As the floors had not been renovated for over 25 years and all had a build up of wax and cleaning product, it was best to strip back as much as we could and start with a blank canvas. Once we had done this we were able to restore the floors back to their original appearance and colour with help from Granwax. The entire project took us a week to complete and we are really pleased with the results,” adds Matt.

Martin Cloues, Pastor at Aspley Evangelical Church, comments, “The floors of our church have been subjected to a lot of wear and tear since it was built in the 1930’s, not only with our regular services but also with our youth clubs, community get-togethers and toddler groups. We also had a flood over three years ago which caused a lot of damage.

“However, it was our 80^thbirthday this year so we decided it was time to give the floors the tender loving care they deserved. The transformation Matt has made is incredible, the finish is beautiful and it has helped to bring the whole Church to life,” adds Alistair.

Is your windscreen crystal clear?

Keeping your car windscreen clear and streak-free is essential for safe driving. During the winter months in particular, the glare from a low winter sun on a smeared windscreen can contribute to a hazy vision of the road ahead. Whilst there are hundreds of pricey, specialist car care products on the market, simple and inexpensive White Vinegar is just as effective at removing dirt from glass.

To keep windscreens clean and clear, spray White Vinegar directly on to the glass and buff to a shine using a microfibre cloth. This method can also be used to clean the inside of windows, as well as helping to remove any unwanted stickers. Simply soak a kitchen cloth with White Vinegar and place onto the sticker for 10 minutes. Remove the cloth and wipe the sticker away with ease.

Wiper blades are also essential in winter weather. If they judder or miss areas when in use, clean them with the White Vinegar. If the problems persist, it is time to replace them.

Cleaner, Quieter Power - It's the Battery Revolution

Managers of vehicle fleets within warehouses and industrial sites are faced with a number of power source options including diesel, petrol and LP Gas, but there is one power source that still dominates the sector – battery electric. Peter Atack, Product & Technical Manager of GNB Industrial Power, explains why battery power remains the number one choice for users of forklift trucks and other materials handling equipment.

“Traction batteries have been providing a clean, quiet, reliable power source for over 150 years and recent advancements in technology mean batteries are now offering larger capacities and increased operating times. Any advantages that fossil fuels had in terms of operational benefits are rapidly being eroded and are more than out-weighed by other financial and environmental benefits of batteries.

“By their very nature, battery powered trucks are more reliable than their internal combustion engine counterparts. There are no gearboxes to transmit power to the wheels and they have fewer moving parts subject to malfunction and wear. Most vehicle engineers will testify that the more technology put into engines, the more things there are to go wrong! Many will sing the praises of older engine designs in which they could simply open the bonnet and fix whatever had broken. However, in electric vehicles power flows through a simple controller to the electric motor and then to the wheels, and because there are fewer moving parts with less mechanical stress, they are more reliable and have a longer operational life. They will also be cheaper to maintain in terms of staff time and replacement parts.

“Of course, in many working environments, electric power is the only viable power source. The lack of polluting and contaminating fumes, considerably lower noise outputs, and minimum vibration means a safer and more pleasant working environment for both the driver and other staff in the vicinity. The food and pharmaceutical industries are just two sectors that, governed by regulation and practical considerations, rely on emission-free materials handling equipment.

“The macro-environment is also another area that benefits from the use of electric vehicles. Although at present, the power used to supply electricity in the UK is largely from fossil fuels, the reality is that a modern power plant is burning fuel more efficiently (and transforming it to electrical energy) than an internal combustion engine. Environmentally aware businesses already have the option of buying their electricity from renewable sources and with increasing European and global pressure, the proportion of environmentally sound power will increase. This, together with the rise in oil prices, makes battery power even more economically viable.

Derbyshire company produces Soda Crystal that can withstand heats of 100°C making them ideal for overseas export

Dri-Pak Limited, a producer of traditional and sustainable household cleaning products, has today unveiled a new grade of Soda Crystal which is suitable for export to hot countries.

The Derbyshire-based company has been producing Soda Crystals for over 50 years, for both consumers and retailers. However, at the moment these crystals can only withstand heats of up to 32ºC before they solidify or melt. This has limited the number of countries the product the can be exported to. To counteract this problem, Dri-Pak has developed a new grade of Soda Crystal by changing the formula of the crystal. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) slips, trips and falls make up more than half of all reported injuries in the work place, and almost a third of these injuries result in employees being absent from work for three days or more. Natural and safe modelling clay for kids

Bicarbonate of Soda has hundreds of uses around the home from baking to cleaning and even deodorising - but did you know it can also be used to keep your little angels occupied? Bicarbonate of Soda can be made into a natural and safe modelling clay to be used for creative and educational activities. Kids can build their very own 3D art can then be kept or reused and turned into another work of art. This simple recipe for making clay is safe and inexpensive and will keep them entertained for hours. Who knows, it may even inspire the next Michelangelo!

To make natural Bicarbonate of Soda modelling clay, mix 400g Bicarbonate of Soda, 100g cornflour, 250ml of water and a table spoon of vegetable oil in a saucepan. Gently heat the mixture until it becomes the consistency of mashed potatoes, and leave to cool under a damp cloth. Once the mixture is cool, divide into separate trays, add a few drops of food colouring to each and mix into the clay thoroughly. Dust an old surface with a handful of cornflour and let the kids start creating their masterpieces!

Using cookie cutters is a great way of teaching children about shapes and they will love squeezing and pressing objects into the clay to make new ones. Let their imaginations run wild by letting them mould their own forms, or even creating new colours by mixing different clays together! The clay can be kept in airtight containers to be used for next playtime, or left to harden for 2-3 days before being painted.

Granwax commits to raising industry standard as part of the British Wood Flooring Association

Expert floor finish company, Alfreton-based Granwax Products Limited, is helping to shape the future of the British flooring industry with the development of the first industry-recognised organisation, the British Wood Flooring Association.

Developed in partnership with ten other companies, the British Wood Flooring Association (BWFA) has been created to raise the standards of the wood flooring industry through education and training. For installers and suppliers, membership to the BWFA demonstrates a commitment to upholding the highest standards of craftsmanship in both the installation process and product aftercare. The Association also acts as an independent reference point for customers who want a top quality product, together with guaranteed peace of mind.

“The UK flooring industry has never been standardised nor had a representative trade body. At Granwax Products we knew it was vital to the future of the industry that such an organisation should be established, both as an impartial resource for customers and to improve industry standards through specialist training,” explains Carl Blythe, Director of Granwax Products Limited.

Does your washing machine smell as fresh as you’d like?

Do you ever open the door to your washing machine expecting the smell of freshly washed clothes but are instead met by a fusty, damp odour? Smelly washing machines are not only unpleasant but they can also transfer bad smells to clothes, meaning they have to be rewashed. But don’t worry; there is an easy, inexpensive and effective way to eliminate bad smells from your machine using traditional Soda Crystals, Citric Acid and White Vinegar!

Washing machines emitting bad odours are usually the result of a build up of bacteria, often resulting from using cooler wash temperatures and gentler washing powders. Warmth from central heating can also cause the bacteria to grow more easily.

To eliminate smells, scum, detergent and grime from your machine simply add half a bag of Soda Crystals, split between the detergent drawer and the drum and run the machine empty on a 60 degree cycle, or higher if there is a significant smell. This will raise the PH of the water and help to wash away the smell-causing bacteria.

If you are in a hard water area, it is recommended to repeat this process using either 500ml of White Vinegar or a packet of Citric Acid to which will remove limescale build up and complete the cleaning process.

Not only will Soda Crystals, White Vinegar and Citric Acid eradicate bad smells in your washing machine, they will lower the power consumption of the machine by descaling the element.
